Field day - Systems that Work for You - Morrinsville, Waikato

Date: Thursday, 8th November 2018
Time: 10 am for a cuppa, main programme 10.30 am - 2 pm
Location: John and Anne Higgens, 555 Hutchinson Rd, Kereone, S/N 76884

Our hosts, John and Anne Higgens, have their 210 cows on a 16-hour milking interval from Melbourne Cup Day and raise minimal numbers of heifers, instead buying in replacements as two or three year olds. At this field day we will look at how their system works for them. Also:

Making your milking routine hum

How many hours do you spend in the shed each day? Do you wish you could get more done but you just don’t have the time? In this session Josh Wheeler, QCONZ, will talk about practical ways you can smarten up your act to benefit you, your cows, and your bottom line. His session will include: ways you can improve your milking efficiency, optimising your milking machine to improve milking speed, and how a change in milking interval might work for you.

Heifers - home, away or none?

More than ever, recent developments in the industry have us all looking at our replacement policies. In this session Mark Neal, DairyNZ, will look into three different options: keeping heifers at home, sending them away for grazing, or buying in replacements. What are the pros and cons of each option, its costs and returns?

Out weed!

How are the weeds looking on your place? Have you got them under control? Weeds like Californian thistle, yellow bristle grass and buttercup can be a real nuisance, but we have a weed expert coming to tell you how to get rid of them! Paul Addison, Nufarm, will talk about: gaining control of weeds in existing pastures, the key strategies to keep weeds out of new grass, and controlling weeds in crops.

Free event, all welcome. Morning tea and lunch provided.
